There has been a lot in the news recently about MRSA (Methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus aureus). MRSA is a bacterial strain of a staph infection
that is resistant to Methicillin (an antibiotic) and most commonly found
in crowded settings where contaminated items are shared (prisons,
military, athletic locker areas...). Painful red bumps or boils are the
most common signs of the infection. As a result, the district has done
the following:
As of October 22, 2007:
●
All coaches have been given MRSA information to review and distribute
to their teams.
●
MRSA information was given out to winter athlete parents on October 22
at Meet the Coach Night.
●
“A Guide
for Coaches” and “Athlete's
Guide” is located on the Candor web page under "Athletics".
●
All cleaning products used by the district meet the MRSA disinfecting
standards as determined by the Health Department and the EPA.
●
Cleaning protocol has been reviewed and updated to incorporate
suggestions by the Health Department.
Here are a list of suggestions to minimize the risk of MRSA
transmission:
√
Avoid contact with potentially
contaminated items such as community towels and razors, or another
person’s wound, cut, or lesion.
√
Shower with soap after activity; wash hands frequently.
√
Keep sores or cuts clean, dry, and completely bandaged.
√
Launder personal items such as towels and athletic clothing.
√
Report any sores or wounds to the school nurse or your health care provider upon discovery.
√
Learn to recognize wounds that could be potentially infectious.
If you have questions regarding MRSA, please contact your school nurse.
If you have questions regarding school policy or procedure involving
MRSA, please feel free to contact the Superintendent in the District
Office. Thank you.
