Guthrie Health Professions Scholarship                                           January

$4,000 awards for graduating seniors whose parent is an Elk in good standing of a Lodge

in New York State.  Both merit and need based.  A 350 word statement about leadership in high school is required.  Also, a letter from a parent confirming financial status is needed.  High School transcript and Regents scores are also needed and one letter of recommendation and one letter of endorsement.  If your parent is a member of the Elk’s Lodge, let your Guidance Counselor know that you would like to be considered.

American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year                                        March 3

The student will receive a $10,000 scholarship.  Three second-place scholarship awards will also be given in the amount of $2,500 each.  Nominees must be a registered, active member of a Boy Scout Troop, etc. chartered to an American Legion Post or be the son or grandson of a Legionnaire or Auxiliary member. He must have received the Eagle Scout Award, the Boy Scout religious emblem, and have demonstrated practical citizenship in church, school, Scouting, and community.  Let your Guidance Counselor know if you would like to be considered and if you fit the above criteria.

Broome Tioga Counselors Assoc. Scholarship                                  March 17

Independent Mutual Aid Assoc. #439 Scholarship                           March 27

$150.00 will be awarded to a graduating senior.  Graduate must be child or grandchild of a member of the Independent Mutual Aid Assoc. and must be accepted at an institution of higher learning.  The applicant must write a personal essay on what his/her Italian heritage means to him/her.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

 

Daughters of the American Revolution – The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution offers a variety of scholarships to qualified seniors.  The amounts, purposes, and eligibilities vary.  No DAR affiliation is required (except for one scholarship).  Most of the scholarships are for students pursuing specific majors ranging from history and political science to nursing.  Additional information is available in the Guidance Office.

 

The Amy Bindelglass Memorial Scholarship                                    April 1

One first place winner will be awarded a $500 scholarship and one second place winner will also be selected to receive a $200 scholarship.  To apply you must be a high school junior or senior and write a convincing persuasive essay on an assigned topic.  Essays must be between 1,000 to 2,000 words and demonstrate a clear understanding of the regulations and ethics surrounding organ donation. 

 

New York State Lottery Scholarship                                                 April 8

This $5,000 scholarship will be distributed in payments of $625 per semester on one graduating senior.  The student nominated will need at least a ‘B’ average based on 7 semesters of high school and plans to attend a New York accredited college, university, trade school, or community college.  Student should have experiences in extracurricular and community activities, as well as leadership.  Essay required that describes community service.  This is by nomination, but let your Guidance Counselor know that you are interested in being nominated.  You may be nominated if you fit the criteria.

 

 

David Rossie Journalism Scholarship                                              April 16

This is a $500 award will be made available to a graduating senior who plans to pursue a career in journalism.  Applicants will be judged on their academic performance, writing skills and community engagement.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

 

Legal Staff Alliance of Broome County                                            April 24

This $1,000 scholarship is offered to a student pursuing a college education in the legal field.  The student will be required to write an essay of no more than 500 words on a legal issue, explain how it impacts your life, describe how you think a Court should decide the issue and why the Court should make such a determination.  Or, if a Court has already issued a decision on your particular issue, state whether you feel the Court was correct and explain why or why not.  Some examples of legal issues you may wish to write about include bullying over the internet, the right to prayer in school, mandatory drug testing for athletes or the right to search school grounds.  These are only suggestions and you may choose any topic.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

 

VFW Scholarship                                                                              May 1

A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded each year by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1371.  The student must be a resident of Tioga County in excess of four years by graduation and maintain an average above 80% for the first three quarters of their senior year. They must be accepted to and plan to attend an institution of high learning in a 2 or y year program.  Students whose parents/relatives who have served in the Military and honorably discharges will be given FIRST consideration.  The recipient must be able to attend a check presentation held in June at the VFW Post in Owego.  Let your Guidance Counselor know if you fit the above criteria.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

Ladies of Charity Annual Scholarship                                             May 1

An award of $750 will be given to two graduating high school seniors who plan to pursue a career in service to others.  Based on academic achievement, financial need and service to school, church and community.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

 

Jonathan B. Roman, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund                    May 1

A $250 educational scholarship will be awarded to a senior who has a 75% or above GPA, demonstrates a record of service to community members, and has a desire to pursue a higher education and has a financial need.  Submit a personal biography that addresses your community support and furthering your education in the Fire Service field to the Guidance Office.

 

Owego Rotary Club Student Scholarship Award                              May

High school seniors with a 75 or above grade point average.  Student should be involved in extracurricular activities and community service with plans to pursue studies at an institution of higher education to become a positive member of society.  Brief paragraphs need to be written describing family and reason for applying.  Three references are needed.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

 

The Vietnam Moving Wall Award                                                    May 8

Student must be the son, daughter, grandson, or granddaughter of a veteran and demonstrate financial need.  Student must also have a record of volunteer work/community service and should have already been accepted into a program of higher education.  A brief paragraph describing why the award would be an honor to receive is required.  This is a $500.00 scholarship award.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

 

Candor Emergency Squad Guthrie One Memorial Scholarship       May 10

This $300.00 Scholarship is awarded annually to a qualified applicant that is accepted or enrolled in an accredited school for: Paramedic Training, Advanced EMT3 Training, Nursing, Physician, or related Health Care Professionals.  Award shall be made based on the following priority: Candor Emergency Squad Active Senior members and their children, Candor High School graduates, Candor Fire Dept. active members and their children. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

 

Candor Community Chorus Award                                                   May 15

This award of at least $200.00 is available to a graduating senior/college student who will be pursuing a post-secondary education majoring in a fine arts program.  Applicants must have a cumulative average of at least 80%.  The student must submit a completed application with a brief paragraph stating the importance of fine arts to him/her.  The selection will be made by the Chorus Committee and the award will be presented on the 4th of July.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

 

Sam Walton Community Scholarship

Applications are available in December at local Wal-Mart stores.  This scholarship is based on community involvement, work experience, academic record, SAT/ACT scores, and financial need.  Student cannot be a Wal-Mart employee.

 

Safari Club International Scholarships                                             May 30

There are two $1,500 scholarships available for seniors who are planning to major in Forestry, Conservation, Environmental Sciences, Veterinary Medicines, or Fisheries and Wildlife Management.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office.
